Travelling solo can be one of the most liberating experiences of your life. It exposes one to many challenges that otherwise unknown to us in our comfortable homes and lux city lifestyles. These challenges offer us tremendous opportunities to realize our strengths and weaknesses alike, and allow us to work on them. When you are alone in a place stuck somewhere with no one to rely on but yourself, it opens numerous doors for self- realization and enhances your problem solving skills.

For a solo traveler, having all essentials and emergency items at one arm's distance is of utmost importance. A wise person once said that when travelling alone, travelling light is not as important as packing smart. So here we have jotted down a list of absolute essentials that should make it to your bag next time when you're planning a trip all by yourself.

Power bank or portable charger

The times that we live in, it is safe to say that we are dependent on our cellphones for most things, be it directions, clicking pictures, maps, checking nearby places to eat, etc. It is an absolute bummer when you have to look for spots to charge your phone/iPad in a strange city. So do yourself a favor and keep a USB power bank with you at all times to charge your phone and other electronic devices.

Paperwork and Passport Size Photos

Keeping important paperwork might sound a little obvious and cliche, but it is always good to double check if you've kept an identity proof, flight/travel tickets, pen and journal etc. before you go on with your journey. Also remember to keep two passport size photographs of yourself just in case you need to fill some last minute forms for travel passes or accommodation.

First aid kit and customized medication

Keep a first aid kit including bandages, antiseptic liquid, band-aid, scissors, tweezers etc. with yourself for emergencies since you're the only person you'd be with during the whole trip. It’s always good for a solo traveler to be self-reliant in case of an emergency. Stock some anti bacterial wipes as well to keep germs at bay to avoid falling sick for you'll be a frequent at some unhygienic tourist places.  Also carry generic medicines for headaches, mild fever, nausea and painkillers for you might need them anytime.

A small sling/money bag

Always keep a small sized bag with you for carrying money and other essentials like tickets, keys etc with you. It serves you well to keep all your important belongings with you at all times. This way you can also tuck them with you at night while sleeping in a bus/train.

A lock

This may sound like a no-brainer since most people carry locks for their luggage, but having a decent lock with you becomes all the way more important while travelling alone. It keeps your belongings safe while on a bus/train ride or when you are sharing rooms in hostels.
